Fixed vs Mechanical Broadheads

The most argued-about decision in bow hunting, settled for a first-season hunter: what each design actually trades away, and why draw weight decides it for you.

Start with a fixed blade.If you are shooting a beginner compound somewhere between 45 and 60 pounds, a fixed head puts more of your arrow’s limited energy into going through the animal and has nothing that can fail at the shot. Mechanicals are excellent broadheads and a large number of deer are killed with them every year — but their two big advantages (field-point flight and a wide cut) matter most to hunters who already have energy to spare, and their one big disadvantage lands hardest on hunters who do not.

How they actually differ

A fixed-blade broadhead is a solid piece of steel with blades permanently exposed — either one machined piece, or a ferrule with replaceable razor blades locked in place. A mechanical (also called expandable) broadhead flies with its blades folded against the body and deploys them on impact, usually by the blades catching on hide as the head drives in.

Penetration: why draw weight decides this

An arrow carries a fixed and fairly small amount of kinetic energy — far less than a bullet. Everything a broadhead does costs some of it. Cutting hide and muscle costs energy; breaking a rib costs energy; and on a mechanical, opening the blades costs energy before any cutting happens. That is a real, physical trade-off, and it is why the fixed/mechanical argument is not actually a matter of taste — it depends on how much energy you have.

A hunter shooting 70 pounds with a heavy arrow has energy to spare, so spending some on deploying a wide-cutting head is a good trade: bigger hole, better blood trail, easier recovery. A beginner shooting 45–55 pounds — which is exactly what we recommend in what draw weight to start at — does not have that margin. Spend it on getting through the far side of the animal instead. A pass-through gives you two holes and a blood trail you can follow; a mechanical that stopped against the off-side shoulder gives you one hole halfway up the body and a long, bad night.

Flight and tuning: the mechanical’s real advantage

Here is the honest case for mechanicals, and it is a good one. A fixed blade’s exposed blades catch air and steer the arrow, so any imperfection in your bow’s tune gets amplified — your field points group beautifully at 20 yards and your broadheads land four inches left. A mechanical flies with almost the same profile as a field point, so it lands where your practice arrows land, with no tuning drama.

That matters a lot if you are buying a bow in September and hunting in October. But note what it really is: a way of hiding a tuning problem rather than fixing one. A bow that shoots fixed heads well is a bow that is genuinely tuned, and that pays you back in accuracy with every arrow you shoot. If you have time before the season, tune the bow and shoot fixed. If you are out of time and your broadheads will not group, a mechanical is a defensible short-term answer — and a paper tune at a shop is the better one.

Either way, shoot your hunting heads first

Whichever you choose, put your actual hunting broadheads on your actual arrows and shoot them into a broadhead-rated target at your intended hunting distance before opening day. This is not optional. If they do not land with your field points, you have found a problem in the backyard rather than at full draw on a deer.

What can go wrong with each

A fixed blade can go dull, and it can bend or crack its ferrule if it hits heavy bone — both of which you catch by inspecting it. That is close to the complete list. Its failure mode is “the shot was fine but the head is now scrap.”

A mechanical has a mechanism, and mechanisms fail. The two real-world failures are deploying in flight (the arrow becomes wildly inaccurate mid-air, usually after brushing a twig or from a poorly-retained blade) and failing to deploy (you punch a field-point-sized hole with a poor blood trail). Modern designs have made both rare, but rare is not never, and every additional part is another thing between you and a clean kill. For someone taking their first shot at an animal — already dealing with adrenaline, an unfamiliar distance and a moving target — removing variables is worth real money.

The verdict for a first season

Buy a proven fixed blade in 100 grain, tune your bow to it, and shoot it until you are confident. Revisit mechanicals in a season or two, once your draw weight has come up, your bow is tuned and you know what a well-flying arrow looks like — at that point the wider cut is a genuine advantage rather than a gamble against your own energy budget.

First, check your state’s regulations: a handful of states restrict mechanical broadheads or set a minimum cutting diameter, and your state wildlife agency publishes the rules alongside your tags.
