TFO Fly Rods Review
Temple Fork Outfitters sells rods designed by people whose names are on casting books, at prices that undercut the brands those designers used to work for. The range is wide and the model names are unhelpful. Here is which TFO rod to buy for small water.

- 1

A medium-action trout rod that is built to put a fly down softly rather than to throw a whole line. That is the right priority on small water, where the fish are twenty feet away and spooky, and it is why this is the TFO that turns up in trout anglers' hands rather than the faster models.
Best for: Best TFO fly rod for trout — the dry-fly and presentation rod9.3 - 2

The one to buy if your water is brushy. Eight feet of rod in a 4-weight keeps the tip out of the alders behind you and still has enough backbone for a decent fish. Of everything TFO sells, this configuration is the closest thing to a purpose-built small-stream rod.
Best for: Best TFO for creeks — the short 4-weight9.4 - 3

The default size in the default range: 9 foot, 5-weight, four pieces. If you fish creeks, small rivers and the occasional stillwater and you only want one rod, this covers all of it. Faster than the Blue Ribbon, so it handles wind and an indicator rig better.
Best for: Best all-round TFO — the one-rod answer9.2 - 4

The range carrying Lefty Kreh's initials, and the nicest-finished rod here. At 8 ft 6 in in a 4-weight it is a genuine small-stream rod with better components and a case included, for roughly $70 more than the Pro III. This is the step up that is actually worth taking.
Best for: Best TFO to keep for twenty years — the Lefty Kreh range9.3 - 5

TFO sells this configuration as a kit rather than a bare rod, which is the simplest way into the brand if you own nothing yet. Read the listing contents before you order — kit contents vary by seller — and compare the total against buying the Pro III plus a reel and line separately.
Best for: Best TFO route to a complete first setup8.9

Buy the Pro III in 8 ft 4wt if you fish brushy creeks, the Blue Ribbon 9 ft 5wt if you want the softest presentation, and the Pro III 9 ft 5wt if you want one rod for everything. Those three cover the useful part of the TFO range for trout. The LK Legacy is the step up worth taking if you fish enough to notice better components.
This is a range review built from TFO's current retailer listings and published specifications. We have not cast every rod in the line and do not claim to.
What TFO actually is
A designer-led brand that sells at mid-market prices.Temple Fork Outfitters built its reputation on rods developed with casting instructors and guides — the LK ranges carry Lefty Kreh's initials — sold without the markup of the premium names. You are buying taper design rather than finish.
The range is wide, which is the one real drawback. TFO sells far more models, lengths and weights than Redington does, and the listings are often titled as nothing more than a weight, a length and a range code. That is fine once you know what you want and bewildering before.
Demand for the brand is flat year-round rather than seasonal. That is unusual in fishing gear and it tells you something: these are rods people research and buy deliberately rather than impulse purchases off a seasonal display.
The range, compared

Which TFO should you buy?
Creeks under twenty feet wide: the 8-foot 4-weight. Rod length is the spec that decides whether small-stream fishing is pleasant or a fight with the vegetation. Short rod, light line, short casts — the whole argument is in the small-stream rod roundup.
Dry-fly water: the Blue Ribbon. A medium action puts the fly down without slapping it, which on a flat pool is the difference between a rise and a wake going the other way. It is the gentler rod of the two in a 5-weight.
One rod, mixed water: the Pro III 9 ft 5wt. The standard answer, and the right one if you cannot predict where you will be fishing. Our general process for this decision is in how to choose a fly rod.
TFO sells plenty of rods we do not cover
Decoding the model names
Blue Ribbon is the trout presentation range. Medium action, built around dry flies and light tippet. The name refers to blue-ribbon trout water, which is a fair description of the job.
Pro and Pro III are the all-round ranges, sometimes listed as P3.Medium-fast, broad lineup, the volume seller. If a listing reads "5 wt. 9'0" 4 pc. P3 Rod," that is a Pro III.
LK and LK Legacy are the Lefty Kreh ranges. Better components, nicer finish, case included, more money. NXT is the entry range and is largely sold in heavier weights.
The warranty
TFO rods carry a lifetime original-owner warranty with a service fee per repair. That is the same structure as Redington and Echo: you send the broken section, you pay a processing charge, you get a replacement. Keep your receipt, because original ownership is the condition.
It is a mail-in process, not a part in your tube.If what you want is to fix a broken tip in the parking lot, that is Moonshine's model instead — see the Moonshine review. For most anglers the warranty is the better deal, because it covers breaks a spare tip cannot.
The alternatives
Redington, for a simpler decision. Four rods instead of forty, at similar prices, with the Classic Trout as a direct Blue Ribbon rival — the Redington review has the detail.
Echo, for a crisper blank. The Carbon-XL and the short Lift rods compete directly with the Pro III at a slightly higher price: the Echo review.
Or step up to the premium names. If you fish fifty days a year, the rods in the high-end fly rod roundup and US-built rods are where the money goes next. The whole field is ranked in the best fly rod brands guide.

Frequently asked questions
Are TFO fly rods good?
Yes - Temple Fork Outfitters builds designer-led tapers at mid-market prices, with a lifetime original-owner warranty and a service fee per repair. The Blue Ribbon and Pro III ranges are both strong trout rods; the main drawback is a range so wide that the listings are hard to navigate.
Which TFO fly rod is best for trout?
The Blue Ribbon in a 9-foot 5-weight for dry-fly water, because its medium action lands a fly softly. For brushy creeks, the Pro III in 8 foot 4-weight is the better configuration - a shorter rod keeps your backcast out of the trees.
What does P3 mean on a TFO rod listing?
P3 is the Pro III range - TFO's medium-fast all-round series. Listings are often titled with nothing but the weight, length, piece count and range code, so '5 wt. 9'0" 4 pc. P3 Rod' is a 9-foot 5-weight four-piece Pro III.
What is the difference between TFO Pro III and LK Legacy?
The LK Legacy is the Lefty Kreh range: better components, a nicer finish and a case included, for roughly $70 more. The Pro III is the volume all-rounder. Both cast well; the Legacy is the one to buy if you fish enough days to notice hardware.
Does TFO have a lifetime warranty?
TFO rods carry a lifetime warranty to the original owner, with a service fee charged per repair. It is a mail-in replacement process rather than a spare section you already own, so keep your proof of purchase.
