Gator Waders Review

Gator Waders is a waterfowl brand that happens to sell waders anglers buy. Most of its range is insulated hunting gear we do not cover, so this review sticks to the fishing-relevant models - the Retro neoprene chest waders and the boots - and says plainly where to look instead.

Gator Waders Men's Retro Neoprene Chest Waders product photo

The one model in the range built for fishing rather than for sitting in a blind. Neoprene body, extra-roomy inseam and a high rise, which is a genuinely different cut from the standard wader pattern and suits a taller or broader angler. Hand-warmer pockets are a cold-water feature, not a creek one.

The women's cut of the same idea, with the boots attached. That makes it one purchase rather than two and it suits cold-water fishing from a bank or a shallow creek. As with the men's model, it is a late-season garment rather than an all-season one.

Gator Waders Men's Camp Boots, Waterproof Ankle Boot product photo

A neoprene-lined waterproof ankle boot for the walk from the truck, a muddy bank or a boat deck. It is not a wading boot: there are no drainage ports, so water that gets in stays in. Useful footwear, wrong tool for standing in a creek.

Frogg Toggs Hellbender PRO Breathable Stockingfoot Chest Wader product photo

If you came here for a trout wader, this is the honest recommendation. A breathable stockingfoot chest wader lets sweat out on the walk in, takes a real wading boot and works from April to October, which no neoprene wader does. It also costs less than the Gator Retro.

Best for: Best alternative for trout — buy this instead for creeks9.1

If you want Gator Waders for fishing, buy the Retro neoprene chest wader — and if you fish creeks for trout in anything but late season, buy the breathable Frogg Toggs pair instead. Gator Waders builds its business on insulated waterfowl waders. The fishing-relevant part of the catalog is one neoprene chest wader in men's and women's cuts, plus boots.

This is a range review from the brand's current retailer listings. We have not field-tested these waders and do not claim to.

What Gator Waders actually sells

Insulated neoprene waders in camo, mostly for waterfowl hunting. That is the core range: heavy insulation ratings, camouflage patterns, blind-friendly features. It is well-regarded gear for that job and it is not what this site covers.

The fishing crossover is the Retro line. A neoprene chest wader with a roomy inseam, a high rise and hand-warmer pockets, sold in bright non-camo colorways. Anglers buy these for cold-water fishing and for the fit, which is cut with more room than the standard wader pattern.

Plus camp and deck boots. Waterproof ankle boots for the bank and the truck. Useful, and not wading boots — a wading boot needs drainage ports so water can leave.

Why most of the range is not here

Creek Cover covers creek, stream and fly fishing gear, not hunting gear. Insulated waterfowl waders are out of scope for this site, so we have not listed, ranked or priced them. That is an editorial boundary, not a judgment on the products.

It also changes what "good" means. A wader designed for sitting still in a flooded field in December is optimized for insulation and camouflage. A wader for walking two miles of creek in May is optimized for breathability and low weight. The same garment cannot be both — the trade-offs are set out in types of waders explained.

Are they worth it for fishing?

For cold-water fishing with an awkward fit, yes. The Retro cut has a roomier inseam and a higher rise than most waders, which is a real answer for a tall or broad angler who finds standard patterns binding. Neoprene is also tougher than a breathable laminate.

For trout creeks in warm weather, no. Neoprene does not breathe at all, so the sweat from the walk in stays with you. Above about 60 degrees that is unpleasant and in July it is unusable, and the Retro is priced where a good breathable wader lives.

And the price is the real objection. At around $200 you are paying breathable-wader money for a neoprene wader. Cheaper neoprene exists — see the HISEA review and the TIDEWE review — and better breathables exist at the same price.

Fit is a legitimate reason to pay more

If standard waders bind across your chest or stop short on your inseam, a differently cut wader is worth real money, because a tight wader fails at the seams rather than breaking in. The cuts built for that are in the best waders for big guys.

What to buy instead for trout

Breathable, stockingfoot, chest height. That is the combination for creek and stream fishing, and the field is ranked in the best fishing waders roundup. Pair it with a boot from the wading boot roundup.

If durability is what attracted you, there are better answers. The pairs built for high day-counts are in high quality waders built to last, including the brands that will actually repair a wader.

And if you only need warmth for a few late-season trips, go cheaper. A budget neoprene bootfoot pair costs half the Retro — the best budget waders has those, and waders vs bibs covers the case where you are not wading at all.

Frequently asked questions

Are Gator Waders good for fishing?

The Retro neoprene chest waders are good for cold-water fishing and for anglers who need a roomier cut, with an extra-roomy inseam and high rise. They are the wrong choice for warm-weather trout fishing because neoprene does not breathe, and at around $200 they cost what a good breathable wader costs.

Which Gator Waders should I buy for fishing?

The Retro Neoprene chest waders - the men's model or the women's bootfoot version. The rest of the catalog is insulated waterfowl hunting gear, which this site does not cover, and the camp boots are bank footwear rather than wading boots.

Do Gator Waders make breathable waders?

Not in the fishing range we can verify. The waders are neoprene, which is warm and tough but completely non-breathable. For a breathable stockingfoot wader you are shopping elsewhere - Frogg Toggs, Paramount Outdoors, Simms and Grundens all sell one.

Are Gator Waders camp boots wading boots?

No. They are waterproof ankle boots with no drainage, so water that gets in stays in, and the sole is not a wading compound. They are the right boot for a muddy bank, a boat deck or the walk from the truck.

What should I buy instead of Gator Waders for trout fishing?

A breathable stockingfoot chest wader with a separate lace-up wading boot - the Frogg Toggs Hellbender PRO is the honest mid-price version and costs less than the Gator Retro. If durability is the priority, look at the Grundens Bedrock or the Simms Tributary instead.
